Big Isn’t Always Better

Have you ever been asked the question… “how big is your company?”. To a small number like 3 or 5 the answer is always a diplomatic, “great!” but you both know that the bigger the number the better and more successful you must be.

Personally I don’t get it, why is big always considered best? To my mind big is always a bigger headache. More employees to manage, bigger IT infrastructure, more expensive rent, more levels of managers, more furniture and more incidental costs that do nothing to help you grow the profits. Last but not least, more stress.

Why is it we can’t just get to the right size for our business then stay there? One example of this is if we look at an institution like Cambridge University they could easily have branches all over the world but they don’t. They’ve found their perfect size and stayed there.

The worst thing you could do is start out say I’m going to be the biggest XYZ company (because it sounds impressive). Remember big is not always better. Perhaps the right size for you is just you and a couple of outsourced staff you can use when you need the extra help? On the other hand it could be 15 people.

When you do grow take it steady, only hire when it starts to get painful. Grow too quickly and you might just skip right past that ideal “not too how and not too cold” zone that’s ideal for your company.

When you grow too quickly and get too big (because you thought big is successful) it’s much harder to scale down without changing your business model and causing pain, stress and frustration for everyone involved.

The bottom line here is don’t feel in any way ashamed of running a small company (even if it’s just you). What’s most important is that it’s sustainable, makes money and also makes you proud.
